Start Fuel Consumption:  A Case Study in Research Ethics, Part 4"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"entry\">\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I bounced all over the corporation.&nbsp; I talked to tire people, engine people,\nlubricant people, air conditioning people, and so forth.&nbsp; If the component used energy, I had them on\nmy list.&nbsp; To this day I remember some of the\nexact things they told me, but the sense of the message was just about the same\neverywhere.&nbsp; To paraphrase, they said,\n\u201cWe know there are bad cold-start properties to our component, but our\ncomponent doesn\u2019t make up enough of the problem for us to get our managers\ninterested.&nbsp; There are solutions we know\nwill work, but they cost a little more than what we are currently doing.&nbsp; Your 15% number will really help us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nothing was being done because nobody had enough skin in the\ngame to pursue a solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I was not being humiliated!&nbsp;\nI was being vindicated!&nbsp; I took\ncopious notes.&nbsp; I didn\u2019t think Spreitzer\ncould be easily persuaded, but maybe I still had a long-shot future at GM.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This was pretty much how my first day and a half of\ninterviews went until I showed up at Engineering Staff just after lunch on the\nsecond day of interviews.&nbsp; I had an\nappointment with an engine person.&nbsp; When\nI checked in at the reception desk, I was told the meeting had been moved.&nbsp; I was escorted to a large executive\noffice.&nbsp; The engine guy was there.&nbsp; Also there were maybe 8 other people in\nexpensive suits.&nbsp; A couple of them\nintroduced themselves by name but not by title.&nbsp;\nI felt I had somehow fallen into a moderate-sized law firm.&nbsp; Everyone was glum.&nbsp; No smiles, no pleasantries, no offers of\ncoffee, no anything human.&nbsp; I was on\ntrial, and I was surrounded by the judge and jury.&nbsp; I had no Miranda rights and no\nrepresentation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the next three hours I was grilled about the\nreport.&nbsp; No technical detail was too\nsmall. &nbsp;If they did not understand my\nanswer they asked again.&nbsp; They asked me\nabout my motivations and my difficulties at getting the report printed.&nbsp; They asked about my background and\nqualifications.&nbsp; With out so much as a\nthank you, I was dismissed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The day was not yet over.&nbsp;\nI walked back to the Research Labs and to my shared office to sulk.&nbsp; This was a disaster.&nbsp; I was finished.&nbsp; Tobin was there waiting for me.&nbsp; I told him what had happened, and he consoled\nme.&nbsp; I canceled the rest of my\ninterviews.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I felt awful the next morning.&nbsp; I hadn\u2019t slept much, and I didn\u2019t have\nanything important to do anyway.&nbsp; I read <em>Ward\u2019s Auto World<\/em> and waited for the axe\nto fall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Later that day Rothery showed up at my shared office and told\nme Spreitzer wanted to see me.&nbsp; I went in\nimmediately and was told to shut the door.&nbsp;\nSpreitzer was furious.&nbsp; Then he\nasked in a barely controlled voice, \u201cWhat the hell did you tell Engineering\nStaff?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I briefly summarized the meeting and left.&nbsp; I figured my next meeting with Spreitzer would\nbe my last.&nbsp; I was pretty much correct on\nthat deduction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I pieced the rest of the story together from second and\nthird hand information.&nbsp; Nobody in the GM\nResearch Labs management seemed willing to talk to me.&nbsp; I teased out most of the story from Tobin,\nwho served as intermediary.&nbsp; Tobin could\nnot keep his cool either, but maybe he was still the better choice for\nconveying actionable information.&nbsp; The antagonism\nlevel in the department was sky high.&nbsp; It\ntook some time for me to figure out what was happening.&nbsp; I can only guess at the order of events\noccurring behind closed doors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The vice president for Engineering had phoned the vice
